As a young geotechnical engineer it is important that you get the right exposure and mentorship early so you dont become stuck in one aspect of Geotechnical Engineering. You need to make sure you get a diversity of projects, have good mentorship to keep your technical development tracking and you need to get exposure to the design side early. I see plenty of young engineers who are purely site focused which limits their options moving forward.

Mentorship : You need a large enough company with a bunch of Seniors capable and willing to mentor. Here a formal and structured mentorship program sees your experience reviewed every 3 months to keep you tracking in the right direction.

Design Exposure : In this company design expousre is encouraged from day 1. Sure you wont be doing complete designs by yourself but that critical expousre is there to be built apon.

Diversity in projects : This company is an international organisation. The scope of projects is very wide and diverse. Areas include, offshore and onshore oil and gas, roads, bridges, tunnels, ports etc. A current project in oil and gas has geotechnical fees totalling $3 Million dollars with the project covering scoping studies, site investigation and preliminary design work. If successful you will be involved in this project.
